Runic Long Seax — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Viking Seax with Runes Etched on a Polished Blade
This is a hand-forged runic long seax — an 18-inch single-edged Viking blade forged in Nepal from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered, with a band of runes etched into its polished surface. A working long seax carrying the symbolic mark of the Norse runic alphabet, it pairs a clean polished blade with a rosewood handle and a yak-leather scabbard.
Hand-forged to order in Kathmandu · Backed by 2 verified customer reviews
The seax was the single-edged blade of the Saxons, Angles and Vikings — tool and sidearm in one. This long seax adds the one thing that turns a blade into a talisman: runes. An inscription drawn from the Norse runic tradition runs along the polished blade, giving it the symbolic weight the Vikings themselves put on rune-marked steel, while the blade underneath stays a fully functional 18-inch seax.
The full tang runs through a 6-inch rosewood handle for a balanced, secure grip, and the blade is polished to show the runic etching at its best. Drawn for reenactment, kept for collection, or set on a stand, it reads as a piece with meaning — Viking heritage you can hold.
Honest note: the runes are a decorative runic-style inscription inspired by the Elder Futhark, etched for symbolic and aesthetic effect rather than spelling a specific historical message — an original Everest Forge design, not a museum-exact replica. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want specific runes or a name in runes? What sets this seax apart is the runic etching worked into the polished steel. The Norse and Germanic peoples carved runes on weapons, stones and amulets as marks of meaning and protection, and this long seax carries that tradition forward — a band of runic script running along the blade. Choose a polished or mirror finish to show it at its sharpest, and pair it with a custom engraving if you want specific runes, a name or a date set into the steel alongside it.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax
5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage — taking care to keep the runic etching clean. For long-term storage, keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil now and then to protect the finish and edge.

What is a runic long seax?
A runic long seax is a sword-length single-edged seax with runes etched into the blade. The seax was the everyday blade of the Saxons and Vikings; the runic inscription adds the symbolic, talismanic character the Norse gave to rune-marked steel. This one is an 18-inch polished long seax.
What do the runes say?
The runes are a decorative runic-style inscription inspired by the Elder Futhark, etched for symbolic and aesthetic effect rather than spelling a specific message. If you want particular runes, a name or a date set in runes, order custom engraving and we will etch it for you.
Is it a sword or a knife?
At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the everyday usefulness the seax was known for. The long seax sits between large knife and short sword by design.
Where is the runic etching?
The runes are etched into the polished blade itself, running along its surface. Choose a polished or mirror finish to show the inscription at its best.
What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?
It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working sword, not a display-only piece.
Does it come sharpened and ready to use?
Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.
What blade lengths can I order?
The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches, depending on the reach and presence you want.
Can I choose the handle and scabbard?
Yes. Handles come in rosewood, white-wood, horn and combinations such as rosewood and bone or rosewood and horn, and the yak-leather scabbard is available in black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.
Can I add my own runes or engraving?
Yes. You can add a name, initials, your own runes or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.
Does it come with a scabbard?
Yes. Every Runic Long Seax ships with a cottonwood-core scabbard wrapped in yak leather, in your chosen colour.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.
How do I care for the blade?
Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage, keeping the runic etching clean. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
